Great Blasket Island
Distance: 10.1km
Ascent: 430m
Jun 2025 - (with Glyn) The Great Blasket Island, the most westerly point in Europe, is the largest of a group of islands located 3 miles off the tip of the Dingle Peninsula. The islands, in particular the Great Blasket, are renowned for their wild ruggedness and beauty. The Great Blasket was inhabited by islanders until 1953, but a decline in their population caused their departure. We took the small ferry from directly outside our accommodation in Dunquin. This was mine and Gemma's second time here. The Grey Seals were on the beach again in their hundreds, and there were some marvellous seabirds. Gemma explored the ruined cottages whilst Glyn and I walked to An Cro Mor and back. Wonderful scenery.
