Walk 296 - Gowbarrow Fell
Aira Force Vid
Distance: 6.7km
Ascent: 410m
Apr 2026 - Ascent from Park Brow. Dec 2011 was the last time I enjoyed this little gem. It's true that the great attraction of this walk is the Aira Force waterfalls. In fact, many people will come just for the falls, and not Gowbarrow Fell itself. That being said, this is a stunning little walk. And all the better when you get away from the crowds at Aira Force. The walk continues by skirting alongside Ullswater with fantastic views over the lake. The ascent is steady to begin with, as you make your way up to a viewing point, where you can take in almost the entirety of the 7-mile long Ullswater Lake. It's a balcony walk with a fantastic path. The summit was peaceful, the weather was great despite the Met Office's bleak forecast. This was irritating as it put Gemma off walking with me this morning. Great return walk through the mossy-green woodland where I enjoyed the cascades of High Force. The last two pics are from Surprise View on the way to Watendlath, and then Watendlath Tarn itself, where Gemma and I retraced our wedding steps.
