Walk 244 - Fan y Big
Distance: 9.3km
Ascent: 390m
Sept 2025 - (with Andy) Ascent from Neuadd car park. Fantastic to see Andy again and so good to be walking together once again and sharing plenty of laughs. The day began with a rendezvous at the Talybont play park just as the early morning mist was lifting. We ventured onto several of its offerings including an extremely spinny thing that left Andy feeling rotten. Our actions piqued the interest of at least one local who arrived in the car and stared at us continually. After a quick coffee in the café, it was off to the start point. We left my car at Blaen y Glyn and drove on in Andy’s motor to Neuadd. Upon climbing out of his car, I inadvertently took with me multiple empty wrappers of Reece’s Peanut Butter Bars that Andy had consumed and dumped in the footwell of the passenger side. Our first task was to direct three halfwits who had no idea where they were going. After Andy’s obligatory roll up, a gentle ascent of Fan y Big followed, apart from the steep pull up at the end whereupon the cloud lifted over Cribyn, and eventually Pen y Fan and Corn Du. After Andy had conducted a conversation with a stranger who he believed to be me, we crossed to Craig Cwareli and crossed across the expanse of Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion to pick up the Craig y Fan Ddu escarpment which offers its usual stunning views down to Talybont Forest and the Pentwyn and Pontsticill Reservoirs. The steep descent to the car was eased by the beautiful waterfalls to our right.
